Today, the genre-bending instrumental music collective Saudade announced that it has signed with Los Angeles label/management company Sargent House. Along with the news comes “Crisis” a new instrumental track featuring a selection of Saudade members including mastermind Chuck Doom, John Medeski, David Torn (David Bowie, The Bad Plus, John Legend, etc,) and Gill Sharone (Marilyn Manson, Dillinger Escape Plan, etc). Other members of the collective include Chino Moreno, Robert Thomas Jr. of Weather Report, Mackie Jayson of Cro-Mags and Dr. Know of Bad Brains. The track is a pummeling three minutes and thirty-four seconds that makes full use of the breadth of insurmountable talent found in Saudade. The song, executive produced by Chino Moreno, is accompanied by a video created by Doom that pays tribute to his mentor Jaco Pastorius and features different members of the collective.
The labyrinth of Saudade’s formation began in the early 80’s with Jaco Pastorius’ mentorship to Doom. Jaco’s premature death occurred during a nine-month period in which Doom suffered the loss of two other profoundly influential people in his life. His loss catapulted him on a 30-year journey throughout the country from South Florida to Woodstock, NY to Los Angeles, and many other places in between where he meet the musicians and friends that would eventually form Saudade. Speaking on the collective, John Medeski explains “it's a huge honor to be part of this project. The first real band I was ever in was with Chuck Doom in the early 80s in Ft Lauderdale, Florida. For this to be coming back around 38 years later is truly magical.” Dr. Know recalls working on Saudade songs right before his heart attack and organ failure in 2015. Now, four years later, as he continues to undergo physical therapy the band continues to inspire him to get back in shape so he can play and record again. Cathy Pellow, owner / founder of Sargent House. recalls “I still remember the moment Chelsea told me that Chino and Chuck had asked her to co-write and sing on a Saudade track. When I heard the final song and learned who the other players on it were I immediately felt a connection to it. I wanted to be involved in this collective. I’m excited for the future collaborations we still have yet to announce and for the ones that are now just still ideas. Saudade encompasses everything I grew up loving about music. They create it with no restrictions. Music is freedom. “
"Crisis” will be released as part of the Shadows & Light / Sanctuary Dub EP 12 inch that includes the previously released song “Shadows & Light” ft. Chelsea Wolfe & Chino Moreno, an upcoming single featuring Los Angeles mutant punks Ho99o9 and another instrumental track that showcases the essence of what the collective is known for. Saudade will continue to invite vocalists and musicians to participate in their collective throughout 2020 and will be releasing the collaborations as they progress towards a full body of work.
